Aglianico del Vulture is the first and most famous doc wine in Lucania. It comes from the volcan Vulture. Aglianico del Vulture is a noble red wine that has seen a big improvement in quality over the last few years.

This wine is produced from purely Aglianico grapes.  Aglianico del Vulture cannot be sold until it has aged for at least one year. It can also endure a lengthy refinement and after 3 years, two of which in barrels, it qualifies as “Old”, while 5 years are necessary to qualify it as “Reserve”.  The minimum alcoholic content must be 12 degrees.  It’s a red wine, ruby-red in colour, tending towards garnet with age. Its full and delicate bouquet improves with aging. The tannins are just right and it become velvety as it ages.  There is also a sparkling version of Aglianico which ferments naturally and is quite sweet.  Aglianico holds an important position in Lucanian and it is producted in Barile, Rionero in Vulture, Rapolla, Atella and Venosa.  The ancient caves dug into the rock are often still used for refining.  Aglianico del Vulture is an ideal wine for the whole meal. It can accompany cheese and meat (lamb, pork or boar), handmade pasta (orecchiette, fusilli, ravioli, strascinati, etc). Better when aged.

It is an ideal accompaniment with Caciocavallo Podolico, Pecorino di Filiano and Canestrato di Moliterno. It’s very good with typical cakes of Lucania (taralli, calzoncelli, etc.).
